The electrode is electrically charged by a servo-controlled generator producing the spark similar to the Sinker EDM Process, but unlike Sinker EDM its only objective is to drill holes. 
A small diameter electrode (.004' -.118' dia) spins about a spindle and plunges into the workpiece much like a drill & drill bit.
I am putting Ford knuckles on ours, with the Ford outers and brakes. Not sure what issues I will run into for steering, but I will be sure to post up with a write up on the conversion junk yard style.I did mine with junk yard parts, but left the Dodge knuckles, because of the steering issues, mainly the different taper size(larger) of the Ford knuckles. I modified the Ford spindles on a CNC mill. I had to slot 1 of the holes in the spindle and milled 3 new holes using the Dodge knuckle hole pattern.
I had to use a carbide end mill due to the surface hardness of the spindle. I used the Ford hubs with the wheel mounting diameter turned down to fit stock Dodge wheels, didn't really need to do this as I have aftermarket wheels that would have fit the Ford hubs without modification. Used rotors for a '78 F250 with Dana 60. There was some discussion on another board about which stub shafts to use Chevy or Ford, in my application '98 2500 the Chevy stubs were too long and the Ford stubs fit perfect.
Everything bolted up pretty easy and I can go back to stock if I want/need to since I didn't modify the stock knuckles. The swap added 3/4' to each side of my width 1.5' overall, can't really tell any difference. That sounds exactly what im looking to do. I got a miller at the school and could use it to mill them. In my opinion locating the parts you're going to need is the hardest part, since they're pretty sought after by the hard core 4x4 guys. The parts i used were off of a '96 Ford F350 4x4.
You'll need the spindles, hubs, outer 'stub' axle shafts, spindle lock nuts/washers, inner/outer bearings, hubs seals, rotors I mentioned in earlier post. I think I spent about $4-500 on the parts. You'll need either a CNC mill or a 13mm carbide endmill for modifing the spindles, I used a CNC a 5/16' carbide end mill and circular interpolated the 13mm holes, you'll need a 12' swing lathe if you're going to do the hub mod.
